In a way, Louise's Bakery came into being long before Louise was even a gleam in her parents' eyes. It was originally the legendary Bauhof's Bakery, which opened the Woodlawn shop in the spring of 1948 and was immensely popular for half a century, holding its own even as competitors sprang up in the surrounding area. When the Bauhof brothers retired and sold the bakery to entrepreneur Jim Lerch in 1997, it appeared to be the end of a golden era. Mr. Lerch found out the hard way that the Bauhof's name, unless it was backed up by their high standards of quality and service, was not enough to carry the business. His failure to live up to their reputation was a huge disappointment to the community,  and the bakery closed the following year. For generations of loyal customers, Bauhof's wonderful baked goods had been a part of holiday traditions and family celebrations, making even ordinary days feel special -- and suddenly, it was gone. It felt like an old friend had died. Fortunately, though, that's not  the end of the story! When the bakery reverted back to the Bauhof brothers, they once again sold it -- only this time, to one of their former employees, Margaret Louise Nichols, who was determined to return it to its past glory. Armed with Bauhof's original recipes, years of experience, appreciation for quality, and respect for the customers, she reopened the bakery on May 1, 1999. Since then, Louise's Bakery has remained true to that vision, still gradually evolving and gaining momentum, with the addition of several new products and services, such as custom-decorated cakes, hand-crafted cake toppers, gourmet coffees and teas, catering, and delivery... and 2 new owners, including me!  My name is Ellen Morgenstern, and I worked for Louise for 5 years before purchasing the bakery from her in 2004. I've also been a customer since birth, having lived next door to the bakery all my life!  I've been blessed with a wonderful staff of talented, dedicated people who enjoy and take pride in their work, most of whom have been here for years. Now (as of March 2008), I'm delighted to announce that our manager/head cake decorator, Chrissy Sheppard (who, incidentally, happens to be Louise's niece) has become the proud new owner of Louise's Bakery! She has never ceased to amaze me with her creativity, energy, and "can do" spirit -- and I'm not just saying that because she's my new boss, either!  I know, from experience, to expect great things from her. We're  excited about bringing this good, old-fashioned bakery into the 21st century, but what's  most gratifying to me is the enthusiasm of the old customers that we've won back. They know, from experience, that good things are not  to be taken for granted. So do we -- and I hope you do, too!
